After more than 5 years in Lyon, I have found a good selection of cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and bakeries in Lyon that offer gluten-free food.
LYON, FRANCE
Chez Gregoire
This little pâtisserie is a must for delicious gluten-free and dairy-free food in Lyon. The quality is so good that you can’t tell you are eating gluten-free and dairy-free. The selection is limited but the quality definitely makes up for it.

Les Gasteliers
Located in the beautiful 6th district, this 100% gluten free café has quickly become my favourite one in Lyon. Although this café is still quite new (open in 2017), it has quickly become a popular café, with a steady flow of customers, but the service is still quite quick, friendly and efficient.
Les Gasteliers offers a wide range of sweet and salty treats. Whether it be patisseries or pizzas, pralines or paninis, muffins or meringues, cakes or quiches, brownies or bagels, you will find plenty of delectable indulgences to satisfy any craving you may have.
The pastry chef has been allergic to gluten since he was a child and now, along with his wife, uses his 25 years of experience to create many delicious desserts. And trust me when I say, they are delicious!!! Not only do they taste great, but the delicate details they put into their desserts is exquisite.
If you are curious as to what flours they use in their food, it is a mix of rice, maize, and buckwheat flour. The have mastered the art of gluten free, because unlike a lot of other gluten free food, it isn’t dry and it doesn’t crumble into pieces when you pick it up.
Considering it is gluten free, which is known to bump up prices, the prices are quite reasonable. Patisseries range between 3-5€ per piece and you can buy a lunch menu for 12.50€, which includes a quiche or pizza, a dessert and a drink.
The great thing about this café is the notify any other possible allergies; eggs, lactose, nuts. So if you are gluten-free, lactose-free, or nut-free, you will know which options you can choose.
Les Gasteliers also have a range of gluten free flours available for purchase, as well as artisan chocolates, meringues, breads and much more.

Supermarkets/Organic Stores
Many of the following supermarkets/stores offer gluten free products:
- Carrefour
- Monoprix
- Casino
- La Vie Claire
- E.Leclerc
- Naturalia
- Vival
- Botanique
In my experience, Carrefour supermarkets (not Carrefour City) offer the widest range of gluten-free products. They offer the following gluten-free products:
- Bread
- Baguettes
- Wraps
- Pizza bases
- Crackers
- Gnocchi
- Hamburger Buns
- Pasta
- Coucous
- Madeleines
- Biscuits
- Croissants
- Crepes
- Waffles.
The annoying thing is every Carrefour offer different gluten-free products. Carrefour in Ecully offer the largest range, so they are your safest bet, whereas Carrefour in the Confluence Shopping Mall don’t sell croissants, waffles, crepes, baguettes and a few more items. The Carrefour in Part Dieu has a good selection, but I feel like it’s hard to find, especially the frozen food. The Carrefour in Vénnisieux has a great selection of gluten free food and you don’t need a car because the tram (the T4) stops outside.
My favourite gluten free brand for bread and other bakery items is Schar (it has yellow packaging with a red logo). Their bread is a very good quality and not dry and crumbly, and they have a wide range of products.
For pasta, my favourite brand is Barilla (it is in blue packaging). They offer spaghetti, penne, coquillettes (elbows), and fusilli. According to their website, they offer a lot more gluten-free products (lasagne sheets, tagiatelle, tortiglioni) but I have never seen these products in the supermarkets. Again, the quality of their products are excellent and I highly recommend.
For gluten-free lasagne sheets, I found them at a Naturalia (Rue Victor Hugo), and I finally found gluten-free cannelloni tubes in Botanic near the Parc de la Tête d’Or, along with a range of other gluten-free products.
It has taken some time to find specific gluten-free products but I’m beginning to know my way around!
